Flash floods sweep away cars in Mexico's Guaymas, one person killed

Torrential rain linked to the remnants of the tropical system Vance flooded the Mexican port city of Guaymas, in Sonora state, on Friday, 30 October. Streets turned into rivers, cars were swept away and water entered homes. One person died after their car was carried off by a swollen arroyo, the city's mayor confirmed. Residents told local media the flooding was worse than during Hurricane Polo.

The storm began at around 4 a.m. local time on Friday and flooded the city centre and the Calzada Norte and Calzada Sur roads, as well as neighbourhoods such as Las Palmas and Adolfo López Mateos, local newspapers El Imparcial and Expreso reported. Hail fell in the south of the city, water poured into houses and the pressure burst open drains. Residents shared videos of cars being carried along streets and arroyos, and Diario del Yaqui reported that some families had to take refuge on the upper floors of their homes and called for help.

Mayor Karla Córdova González confirmed one death during a visit to the south of the city. The victim was found inside a car that had been swept away by the arroyo in the Misión del Sol neighbourhood and wedged under a bridge on Tetabiate Boulevard; firefighters' water rescue team recovered the body. A second vehicle was found under the same bridge. The neighbouring town of Empalme also reported flooding.

Civil Protection asked residents to stay at home, not to cross streams or flooded streets and to call 911 in an emergency. The navy, municipal police and Civil Protection patrolled the city, and buses and taxis stopped running in flooded areas. Authorities had not yet given a count of rescues, damaged homes or vehicles.

Mexico's National Meteorological Service had forecast 50 to 75 millimetres of rain for parts of Sonora, and an alert for Empalme runs from 29 October to 2 November. A viral post on X put Guaymas' rainfall at more than 90 mm; Today News Brief could not confirm that figure with official data. A video filmed by the local outlet Opinión Sonora in the city's Fátima area, shows a car being carried away by the current.
