The collision happened on Monday, 2 November, deep into stoppage time of Tenerife's LaLiga 2 home match against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with the score at 2-2. As a long ball was cleared up the pitch, De Miguel chased it and Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came far out of his area to challenge him, according to The Guardian and AP. Owono was shown a straight red card.
De Miguel lay motionless as players from both teams called for medical help. He was treated on the pitch and taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was admitted to intensive care. The match was abandoned.
