Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket after 13 years and 130 T20 internationals for Australia

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, 38, has retired from international cricket, ending a career that included 130 T20 internationals, 149 one-day internationals and seven Tests. He also retires from first-class and List A cricket but remains available to Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His last game for Australia was against Oman at the T20 World Cup in February.

Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on The Final Word podcast, ending a 13-year career in the T20 format for Australia. The 38-year-old had already retired from one-day internationals in June 2025 and now steps away from T20 internationals as well, as well as from first-class and List A cricket with Victoria. His final match for his country was Australia's last game of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, against Oman in February, where he took two wickets and did not bat.

Maxwell played seven Tests, 149 one-day internationals and 130 T20 internationals, scoring 2,897 T20I runs at an average of 28.97 and a strike rate of 154.42, with 51 wickets and 62 catches. His highest score was an unbeaten 145 against Sri Lanka in 2016. He won two one-day World Cups, in 2015 and 2023, and the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he hit the winning runs in the final.

He said the decision followed discussions with team management before and after the T20 World Cup that were "pretty open ended", with no pressure from the selectors, and that Australia were looking to the future after giving younger players chances in Bangladesh. "I'm grateful for the time I was able to play for my country," he said. Maxwell added that he would have liked a farewell game at the MCG, but understood the direction of the squad ahead of the 2028 Olympics. He will keep playing franchise cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, where his contract has been extended to the 2027-28 season.
