Romania signs a 326.5 million lei deal with Thales for four mobile air traffic radars

Romania's Defence Ministry has signed a contract worth about 326.5 million lei, excluding VAT, with Thales Romania for four mobile approach and landing radar systems for the Air Force. Deliveries start in 2028 and, according to Thales, will be complete by 2030.

Romania's Ministry of National Defence (MApN) said it signed a contract on Tuesday, 27 October, through its General Directorate for Armaments, to buy four mobile approach and landing control radar systems (RDAAM) from Thales Romania. The contract is worth about 326.5 million lei, excluding VAT, and deliveries will be made in stages starting in 2028.

The ministry said the radars will identify and track aircraft and guide them during approach and landing, including in bad weather and in a hostile electromagnetic environment. They can be used for both military and civilian aircraft, day and night, and can feed data into national or NATO air command and control systems.

Because the systems are mobile, they can also be set up at alternative locations, which the ministry said reduces dependence on the fixed infrastructure of air bases and makes the Air Force more flexible and resilient. Thales said all four systems will be delivered by 2030 to four Romanian Air Force sites.

According to Thales, each package includes a STAR NG primary surveillance radar with a range of up to 60 nautical miles, an identification system combining NATO Mode 5 'friend or foe' with civilian aviation technologies, and a precision approach radar that guides aircraft down to the runway. The ministry said Thales Romania specialists will work with local partners on installing, integrating and maintaining the systems.
