Heat director Michael Mann accidentally shoots himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range
Michael Mann, the director of Heat, Collateral and Miami Vice, was taken to hospital by ambulance after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday afternoon, according to TMZ. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the incident to the outlet, describing it as a training accident.

According to TMZ, which cited a source, the 83-year-old filmmaker was apparently trying to holster his weapon at The Range LA at around 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, 31 October, when the gun went off. Officers from the LAPD and crews from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of a shooting at the range.
Police told TMZ that the person injured had no intention of harming himself and was hurt in a training accident after accidentally discharging a firearm into his own leg. Mann was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital. His condition has not been made public, and TMZ said Mann's representative had not responded to a request for comment. Other outlets that have reported the incident, including Consequence, The Sun and The Mirror, have so far relied on TMZ's account.
Born in Chicago in 1943, Mann is one of Hollywood's most admired crime filmmakers. His credits include Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Collateral, Public Enemies, Blackhat and Ferrari, the 2023 biopic starring Adam Driver. He was also the executive producer of the 1980s television series Miami Vice, which he later turned into a 2006 film. The Insider earned him Academy Award nominations for best director and best picture.
His best-known film remains Heat, the 1995 thriller starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, famous for its downtown Los Angeles bank robbery shootout. Mann is known for the realism of his gunfights and for having actors train extensively with weapons before filming. In 2022 he published Heat 2, a novel written with Meg Gardiner that continues the story of the film.
Today News Brief will update this story if Mann's representatives, the LAPD or the hospital release more details about his condition.
