John Anderson, the Country Music Hall of Famer behind hits such as "Seminole Wind" and "Swingin'", has died at the age of 71. His family announced his death on his social media accounts on Wednesday and did not give a cause.

"To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more," the family wrote, describing him as the heart of the family and saying his greatest legacy would be the love he gave them.

Over a career of nearly five decades, Anderson released 22 studio albums, from his self-titled debut in 1980 to "Years" in 2020. He scored 20 Top Ten country hits, five of which reached number one, among them "Wild and Blue", "Black Sheep" and "Swingin'". "Straight Tequila Night" and "Money in the Bank" were also big hits.

He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024, and received the Academy of Country Music's Career Achievement Award in 1993. Kyle Young, chief executive of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, called him a one-of-a-kind stylist who drew fresh ideas from time-honoured traditions.
