Bitcoin on Halloween: from 19 cents in 2010 to about $77,400 today, but down almost 30% on a year ago

Bitcoin was trading at about $77,400 on Halloween afternoon, 31 October 2026, roughly 400,000 times its price on the same day in 2010, when it changed hands for about 19 cents on the Mt.Gox exchange. But it is about 29% below last Halloween's close of $109,556, the highest 31 October price on record.

A list of bitcoin's price on every Halloween since 2010, shared on Saturday by the crypto news account Watcher.Guru, has been doing the rounds on social media. We checked each year against exchange and market data. The table below uses the daily closing price in UTC: Mt.Gox trade records for 2010 to 2012, when it was the main bitcoin exchange, and CoinMarketCap's daily close from 2013 to 2025. The 2026 figure is the live price at 15:42 Bucharest time on 31 October, when CoinGecko, Bitstamp and Coinbase all showed between $77,385 and $77,392.

Bitcoin on 31 October: 2010 $0.19 | 2011 $3.25 | 2012 $11.20 | 2013 $204 | 2014 $338 | 2015 $314 | 2016 $701 | 2017 $6,468 | 2018 $6,318.

2019 $9,200 | 2020 $13,781 | 2021 $61,319 | 2022 $20,496 | 2023 $34,668 | 2024 $70,215 | 2025 $109,556 | 2026 (live, 15:42 Bucharest time) about $77,400.

Watcher.Guru's numbers are broadly right, and almost all fall inside the range bitcoin traded in on each of those days. They are not consistent closing prices, though. The biggest gap is 2024: the list gives $72,250, close to that day's opening level, but bitcoin fell during 31 October 2024 and closed at about $70,215. For 2021 it gives $61,840 against a close of $61,319, for 2020 $13,540, which was the opening price, against a close of $13,781, and for 2017 $6,369 against $6,468. For 2010 it gives $0.20, while Mt.Gox records show trades between 17 and 20 cents that day and a last trade of about 19 cents.

Halloween is also bitcoin's birthday of sorts: the white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto was published on 31 October 2008. Since prices started being recorded, bitcoin has been lower than on the previous Halloween only four times: in 2015, 2018, 2022 and now in 2026. The steepest fall was in 2022, when it lost two-thirds of its value in a year, after the collapse of the Terra-Luna project and as interest rates rose, and just days before the FTX exchange collapsed.

This year's Halloween price comes at a tense moment for the market. On Thursday, 29 October, Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, said about $6.3bn of assets had been hit in the largest crypto hack on record, and bitcoin fell more than 4% after the first alerts. Bitcoin prices change by the second and differ slightly between exchanges, so the figures above are rounded.
