Drone strike near a Sudan market kills 80 civilians in West Kordofan

A drone hit a transport hub in Al-Dibab on Sunday evening where people were boarding trucks after market day, a medical source and a witness told AFP. RSF-linked authorities blamed the army; the army had not responded.

At least 80 people were killed when a drone struck a civilian transport hub in the town of Al-Dibab, in Sudan's West Kordofan state, on Sunday evening, a medical source and a witness told AFP on Monday. The strike hit a place where people gather to catch trucks home after market day. Witness Ahmed Abakar Wadi said he helped bury 50 bodies at the scene, including his brother, and that 47 wounded were taken to nearby Al-Mujlad, where 30 later died. A medic put the total at 80 killed in Al-Dibab and said a further drone strike on Al-Mujlad injured four.

The attack is among the deadliest single strikes since Sudan's war began in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. All of West Kordofan is under RSF control; the RSF-declared Tasis administration accused the army of carrying out the strike with Turkish-made drones. The army had not commented. Aid groups estimate the wider war has killed more than 200,000 people and created the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis. Source: The Guardian / AFP (with France 24)
